EcoGreen Life Cafe, Taman Tun

A medical doctor treated me to an organic lunch at Taman Tun. He is known as a discipline eater. EcoGreen serves organic and vegetarian food. It is owned by Organic Wong who also has 20 acres of farm in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan applying the organic farming methodology.

This is my first at an organic eatery. It is spacious as it occupies double shoplot, bright with a minimalist and simple styling. I feel completely at home. The staff was attentive and the food was served promptly. Within the eatery there is also space/shelves with organic products. Good synergy. Shoppers of organic products will also have their meals there.

Most of the meals are below RM10.00. Creamy laksa at RM5.90!! I had one of the best 'to fu far' since a long while. You should expect the usual lemongrass drink etc etc.

What make this place extra special? Minimum oil was used. No trans-fat. No MSG, no microwaving, no food enhancers, additives, flavouring and preservatives.

This place serves only chicken and fish meat. Fish was sourced from Semporna, Sabah and delivered fresh with no preservatives. Semporna is not only famous as a launching pad to Sipadan but also for its sea aquaculture. When I was there in 1991 lobsters and groupers were already breeding in cages. The sea is very clean and crystal clear. There was no mud and sand. Most of the material on the shore was chalk white tiny bits of corals and shells. The sun rays penetrate through and was reflected and refracted out through these white coral and shells.Wonderful place for marine life. Their chicken are free-ranging.

Organic Brown Rice Nasi Ulam with Mackerel - with tonnes of organic vegetables, herbs and spices. The leaves are crunchy and gives body to the food. With so many colours, smells and tastes what more can I ask for!
Kam Heong Chicken Brown Rice - Free-range chicken cooked with looks of herbs and spices. Chicken was aromatic and tasty.

too bad we don't have a huge selection of organic food supermarkets, as overseas like the US or the UK. I think in the long run, there really is a huge health benefit in going organic. Malaysian market still lagging behind.

Couldn't agree more with C&C -- I sure wish we had more organic foodstuff readily available here and affordable. I think we're really sucking up too many food chemicals these days... :(

CampC... As far as I know there is no legislation and benchmarks from the gov to regulate organic products. Therefore it is not worthwhile for entrepreneurs to invest big money to bring price down:-(

LfB... centuries old monuments decayed due to air pollution and homo sapiens afflicted with all kinds of ailments due to ingesting chemicals used in foods.

ling239... I think these fishes were caught by fishermen and were preserved in ice rather than formalin. Formalin will pickled our internal digestive organs!
This health concept is great in principle but contradicts the practicality/reality of why people eat out which is for convenience and oftentimes , to try new tasty food not normally cooked at home !

We always have a strange feeling that this kind of set-up ( like most vegetarin restaurants) is just another unabashed business gimmick , and so should be taken as such , for we firmly believe that if you really want to be healthy you should only eat home cooked food + doing the other 100 things
LOL !

Vegan and organic food is not doing well. It is unprofitable mostly! The choice of the general public is clear. Pragmatism and practicality rule. I am more concern with chemicals in food than the food itself! But it will come a time where there will be critical mass in the demand. The food in Life Cafe is really good though in taste!

Organic fish and chicken, sounds great! I'll dine out occationally in one of the organic vegetarian restautant. It's operating by a Taiwanese couple in Sungai Petani.

Sg Petani and Kulim are happening places esp. for those on the mainland side of Penang. Love these quaint more quiet locations.

I've been going thru this great debate about the trash we're feeding ourselves so it's opportune that I read this- but also agree with BSG that too often, niche dining concepts such as healthy/organic eating become too gimmicky for its own good.

Yes I dislike business' gimmickry. But there's a sucker born every minute and I do allow myself the luxury of the occasional moment of madness. It may be in the pricing as sometimes the more expensive it is the more exclusive it becomes. Niche? Most likely it is in the claims on its efficacy. If it is too good to be true it is too good to be true!
