Girl and Mummy Curry - Chan Sow Lin Foodcourt

Friends were boasting about this particular curry noodles store for ages and posting incredibly luscious and handsome food photos in the chat group.

You need to Google map "Chan Sow Lin Foodcourt" to get there. Do not use "Girl and Mummy Curry" for address as it will lead you to Hyundai Motor, the other side of the road and no foot access.

The curry broth was thick but without the heaviness feel that made the stomach so weighed done as though it just had a ton of bricks. For Ipoh curry noodles' fans, you will not get that salty and aromatic taste and smell. It is light in that 2 departments. You can add in the curry condiments to get the more savoury taste if preferred.

What's so good? It is in the toppings. Firstly, the generous portion of seehums (blood cockles) were fantastic. Fresh, earthy (not mud) and raw-ish. The taste of the sea.

Then surprise, pork rind in all its glory. I got so many pieces. Its springy and had soaked in and absorbed the curry broth. Its definitely better than the tofu pok a lesser version and substitute of the rind. Finally, the Siew Yoke (roast pork) was very tasty and salted to my level of satisfaction, the way I like it.

Restoran Woh - Bandar Sri Danansara

This was my regular for 8 years before I moved house 2 years ago. I do go back whenever possible. My family liked it here too. My son had many lunches and dinners from their Chap Fan (mixed rice) store. It is the best in Bandar Sri Damansara. And the dishes available are mind-boggling. In fact some families told me that their children literally grew up eating their food.

Here are my favourites. The Penang Mee Yoke or (Prawn Noodles). The thick broth has a robust prawn taste and aroma and that's what matters. Those who want to add toppings have to contend with the price. It's not cheap and they knew they are good.

My other inclinations will be the pork noodles. The broth again was thick and done the right way as long as I could remember. Most times I have them add extra intestines. My weakness.

Most often I would have this for lunch. They have the most succulent roast chicken and one of the best roast pork around. Their sauce will be a simple soy sauce but man, it packed a big punch. Mind you, its a savoury umami taste but then you eat it with your oil rice and chicken. Once the chicken pieces got coated with just a swipe of the soy sauce, its something to be slowly chewed and enjoyed.

It's a joy to be able to drop by and that's the food life as I savour day by day, enjoy these in moderation though.

Acha Curry House - Jalan Gasing

You get big choices of thick curry gravies for your rice. Even if you don't, spoon it onto your veges or just enjoy it on its own for the fun and taste of it. The enticing one was the Salted Fish curry. Imagine, those days where meat was hard to come by, this one would be an appetite opener for the plain rice to drum rolls of joy.

The location off Jalan Gasing is the place for alot of non-Mamak Indian Curry eateries. They are easily over 10 of them. And competition is stiff. If they are no good, then it's the packing up for for them.

Acha has been around for easily 20+ years if I recalled. It's not really a shoplot as it uses the  corner lot space of a shop. An extended roof and viola a tuckshop or canteen. I recalled their tasty deep-fried Tenggiri years ago. Still as fresh and piping hot, this time slightly overdone.

The lamb curry was delicious but we arrived an hour before closing, so we got some small bits with the regular ones. The chicken curry was flavourful and the fried chicken was piping hot and tender enough, though if they removed it from the oil 5 minutes earlier, it would have more moist within.

They meat dishes did not come piled up. It was a reasonable portion therefore reasonably priced. There is a co-relation between the two alright! Do note, try out their Sambal Ikan Bilis. Their Ikan Bilis were fresh and their onions that went with were still visible. The mix was done post frying of the Ikan Bilis. Which means there were steps observed to get desires results.

I liked that they used small ladle/spoon ladle up the curries and vegetables. Waste not. This will keep the cost down, which I will talk about again at the end. The curries and veges would also be moved around tables so request for it if so desired. The staff were responsive and polite.

At the end of meal, I wanted to pay by card as it was RM53. But they don't accept cards. Mercifully, Mrs has. Basically, the meal would be RM48 excluding 2 drinks. If the Banana Leaf Rice plus Sambal Ikan Bilis was RM12, then the four dishes would be about RM6 each. Reasonable to me.

Rustico Neapolitan Street Food - Bexhill-on-Sea, UK

This Italian Restaurant came highly recommended. There are numerous restaurants here from Gurkha to Chinese. Some opened just for dinner. You have to be good to compete for customers.

I was starved for some meat as I would go under the food radar when travelling. Cannibale seems too good to be true. It's freshly baked doughy pizza bedecked with meat: chicken, ham, cured sausage and pancetta or a salt cured pork belly. I couldn't finish and had to doggy bag a third.

Who can resist a mixed platter and street food at that? Especially when nibbling at various dishes. The favourite past times of kids and adults when no one is watching. Frittura, a street food from Naples, is a famous deep-fried small bites. There were four on this platter.

For those who love deep-fried stuff and fritters here is the Italian version. Dough is filled with various cheeses, sauces and some meat and sausage. It was a doughy and cheesey dish. And I am sure many carbo and cheese lovers will be happy with these concoctions.

From their menu: Pizza filled with ricotta (cheese), salsiccia (sausage), pancetta (pork belly) and mozzarella, Potato Crocché (mashed potatoes with egg), Mozzarella in Carrozza (Mozzarella sandwich), Fried Pizza bread with pomodoro (tomotao sauce) and Parmigiano (cheese).

Last, we had folded baked Pizza Margherita. Always a joy when having good Mozzarella and tomato sauces done Italian way. Who knew how to treat fresh, sun ripened but the Italians.

It was said that during a visit to Naples of Queen Margherita of Savoy, wife of King Umberto I, chef Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi and his wife created a pizza resembling the colours of the Italian flag, red tomato, white mozzarella and green basil (taken from website).

Mediterranean Cuisine Herbs, Spices, Olive and Yogurt - Avra Cafe Bexhill-on-Sea, UK

The rich heritage of the various communities no doubt has brought the life the cuisine scene in England. I had some really incredible traditional Greek food lately.

Met the Greek chef and the owner. With 2 years of Koine Greek in school I managed to get some pronunciation going. But nothing has prepared me the moment for the introduction of Greek food beyond feta cheese and Greek yogurt.

Learnt that xoirino means pork. Xoirino Souvlaki with Tzatziki sauce and pita bread. It had pork shoulder for meat. It was so flavourful.

A quick check has it that these were the components of the dish: oregano, pepper, lemon juice and garlic. Not forgetting cayenne powder sprinkled over it. Tzaziki was a mix of yogurt, cucumber and mint. Ate it with pita and what a homely wholesome meal.

We ate quite a bit of vegan food as it is still the Greek Orthodox period leading to the Easter. There is a demand as some forms of Fasting is ongoing.

We had Arakas Latheros, it means peas cooked in olive oil. Peas dominate with addition of carrots, onions, potatoes and tomatoes. With dill, salt, pepper and olive oil we had a dish of healthy proportions.

I thought we had some good soup back home. Here are some great introductions to the  Mediterranean soup.

The Lentils soup had carrots and tomatoes added. Cooked with like oregano, rosemary, black pepper, vinegar and olive oil and we got a thick and well textured soup. It's filling and healthy.

The last was the white beans soup or Fasolada, with celery, onions, carrots, tomatoes and bay leaves. Surprise, its the Greek national dish. It was more soupy. It's simple and nutritious. No wonder some of these dishes are a choices for those who go vegan for a season for spiritual reasons.

As with Mediterranean food, in the hands of any cook, it will turned out great esp with the help of generous among herbs and spices.

Lunch Work Meals - 云来茶室 Kedai Makan Besty Best Taman Sri Gombak

The search for food is endless. Some you get addicted to while others you go at the sour of the moment because of convenience or the cool environment whether with AC or not. This was my first at this Coffeeshop at Sri Gombak.

I have gone to quite a few around here, alone and with colleagues, came to like some and tolerated others for the sake of a meal in camaraderie as well as also in quite peace and solitude alone.

From the last picture you can spot the usual big 5 in the availability of noodles. They are some not listed. Just ask for your Pan Mee and normal Curry Laksa.

It was a warm day and I was perspiring as usual. I do sweat like a pig I admit and others have said. Do. The last it was a usual lunch away from home cool moment.

I had Prawn Mee my usual weakness. It was bit pale but can be counteracted by dunking more Sambal into it to get to the level you want. Don't detect MSG which was a good thing and I dont do too much spicy stuff, so I am happy with a small sauce plate of Sambal to enhance the soup base.

The other shots taken from others' bowls. If you are nearby Sri Gombak do drop in and try for yourself. Sometimes, alone I do order more to sample and try. I just keep off most the noodles which contribute to an ample girth if not careful.

Here I eat to live, and non appetit to all!

Best Chicken Rice - Sungai Buloh

The occasional lone eat needs not be boring especially with Chicken Rice. Here's the full meal in resplendent display of its mains and sides.

The lady who served me took my order without batting an eye, probably used to even bigger eaters. Here is a meal for two. I had Kampung Chicken (drumstick and thigh), innards, bean sprouts and fish and pork balls.

I thought of this place almost each Sunday, whether to detour to Sungai Buloh or go home without my favourite lunch. This shop is even better than many in Ipoh. The free-range chicken is fresh. Not once have gotten a morsel that has the chicky smell, testifying that somehow along the supply chain something is not up to mark. It is also sweet and firm. Drizzled with good soy sauce and accompanied by generous amount of quality fresh chilli and ginger paste, what more can I asked?

My meal wouldn't be complete without the chicken liver and gizzard. What more can I say, these were as fresh as the chicken it came from. The gizzard was chewy and liver soup yet pasty. Both have their own individually taste, a yin and yang, a good combination.

The bean sprouts must be paired with a good soy sauce. But both were slightly behind those in Ipoh. Unless they consign these down from Ipoh by early bus shuttle like a shop in Jalan Gasing used to do but now I am not sure. But I was happy with it as it was close to those in Ipoh.

Finally, the fish and pork balls. These are kind of a misnomer in a chicken rice shop. Why? I have a theory. You need a bowl of soup for each meal. I grew up in such a home. And so were many Asians. Anyhow, the soup was delectable. Each of these shop pay careful attention to their soup. It may be simple but they still want to keep themselves in the good books of the customer.

So with the soup, why not the fish and pork balls to complement and entice the customers to pay more for the meal. The fish ball was slightly off the norm. It was a bit slack in texture. A bit more air and less paste, I thought.  The pork balls were business as usual but I would have prefer bigger ones.
