China Bar - Melbourne

It was a huge portion to say the least. The roast duck was meaty but not chewy. It was tasty enough for me to go after it with gusto. The skin was delectable too as I saw my wife, another officiando of roast duck not missing a step (or bite) as she walloped the fowl I to submission. I missed its after roasting juices on a condiment platter. It would have been if I ordered a platter rather than just toppings. Mine was a combination of two and came together with roast pork.

The fat from the pork was melting in my mouth. The rind was cracking as I ground it to bits. Finally, the dumplings were ordered without sighting the noodles and meat portions. Big mistake. We have to takeaway most of it. Make no mistake it was good and meaty though would not rise to the heights where I have to sing lyrical of its taste.

Rosemary Lamb Cutlets and Napoli Mussels - Degraves Street, Melbourne, Australia

The famous Degraves Street is a good place to have a casual meal. My lamb was satisfying. Done medium, the meat was a delight to chew on releasing its juice. No, it was not gamey. I wished instead of 4 there was half a dozen. The vegetables they laid on may have been hidden but they were flavoured by the excellent sauce. Creamy and tart, a great combination.

Napoli Mussels were appealing to sight and appetising to the palate, what more with Mediterranean seasoning, colour and sauces from this Italian city. Salivating even before diving in. Aromatic touch from herbs and tantalising the palate with basic tomatoes, garlic and onions.

Gummy Shark and Chips - Off The Pier Fish and Chippery, Williamstown, Victoria, Australia

We had an excellent meal at Off The Pier Fish and Chippery. They used Gummy Shark fillet which was fresh, fresh and fresh. It came piping hot and has a subtle and fresh aroma with light sweet taste. The meat was dense and firm. The chips were decadent, hot, crisp on the outside and moist inside, salted and full of carbs that we dared not finish.

We landed from Melbourne City at Williamstown's Gem Pier and was rewarded with a rather open piece of seafront. I guess the Australians just love the sun. I was scorched within the hour. A fun place to go and may I suggest, go early and retreat into the restaurant for lunch and head back to Melbourne after that unless the weather cooperate. Get an open ticket

Famous Sungai Way Ah Sang Bak Kut Teh

We came, saw and got our last pot. Famous in Sungai Way and people making the way there led by the stomachs, habit or been there because of parents or friends.

The broth of the thick herbal style. I am used to both and take a liking for each of their characteristics. The smell of the liquid lingered long after the meal. Especially if fingers were used to pick up the morsels or to conveniently remove bones and ribs from the mouths.

These were so good for the rainy days and cooler climes. The meat was tender yet firm. You could pull the meat off the bones intact. This made it so good for eating something 'solid' yet soft.

One of the best around. Even better than those I frequent in Kepong. If you have not been to Sungai Way it's high time to make the trip.

Excellent Spicy Hunan Food at Da Feng Shou - Ara Damansara

Hunanese dishes for us on a cool night. My wife's favourite spicy food restaurant. In our meal outing book, this is one of the better Chinese restaurant around Ara Damansara and we have been there easily 10 times the last 2 years.

The Malat peppers (numbing hot) bowl of fish fillet in a bowl of spicy super hot Hunanese peppers. I won't go near the bowl as it upsets my stomach. My wife is the brave one. I will go for more soy sauce styled dishes.

The pork belly was excellent. It has to be cooked to perfection to get the texture and taste. The fat melted in the mouth and the rind gelatinously soft yet retained a slight elasticity. The fat with the sauces combined to make this platter so heavenly.

We rounded up the meal with homemade Tofu with minced pork in a claypot. The thin skin held the soft Tofu within ready to reveal its secrets when chewed. The mustard greens were chopped up in small pieces/cubes and lightly stir-fried Cantonese style. A good simple fibrous dish that got us grounded to the earth which give life to us

Tin Ha Kopitiam (Aunty Lan Sarawak Laksa) - Shah Alam (Sungai Buloh)

Kueh Cap, Kolo Mee and Laksa with accompanying condiments

1) Kueh Cap with thick herbal broth and braised pork belly, rind, stomach, roast pork, half egg and Tofu Pok. That's a long list. Broth definitely tasted herbal yet not overpowering like the Bak Kut Teh, a good light meal without the medicinal and herbal overhang

2) Kolo Mee, a lightly tossed yellow noodles, coated with lard and oil. Again no strong sauces. The focus was on the asian-style aldente noodles and the aroma of lard and the chewy sweet caramelised BBQ Pork

3) The best Laksa around. Thick luscious soup in strong spices and herbs. Go heavy and get that powerful laksa kick

The accompanying sauces were great but I thought the food was good enough without the sauces. Try to figure out the pairing of the sauces!

Best Wanton Noodles at Restoran Chong Loy - Petaling Jaya

This evergreen not only fed a generation and the next but also have a thousand tasty stories to tell.
Wanton noodles with the usual and unusual toppings.

Here I have braised pork/wood ears and beef and tripe plus the usual roasted meats of roast duck and pork. The dumplings were a good soupy addition for variety's sake.

Try to go early. Parking is also tight but manageable. A place for the common folks and their families and not forgetting the office folks nearby.
