I am no great fan of Padang food as I have problem handling chilies. I cut down on spicy stuff esp. when I am traveling. Having a stomach upset is really inconvenient. Yes, I do miss out on some of these food but always try to sample it.
Breakfast in Padang is without fanfare. Simple, tasty and nutritious. These were what I had.
The vegetable dish in the forefront was free. It contained boiled tapioca leaves!
Nasi Lemak? No!! It was Banana Leaf Wrapped Rice! It was kept in Bamboo Basket. Nice way to keep it warm.Famous Sambel Merah. A must for Padang food together with Sambel Hijau. It's cooked in oil.
Fresh, really fresh kembong coated with batter and deep fried. I prefer removing the batter and pulled out morsel by morsel of steaming and sea-fresh fish. Nothing could beat fishes that were just caught the same morning!Another take on the sweet and juicy meat with rice and potatoes if so desire!Begedil - a kind of mashed potatoes with shallots, garlic, pepper etc. Deep-fried. Forget about the unhealthy oil. Tasted better than mashed potatoes.
