Breakfast in Padang - Land of the Minangkabau (Part 1 of 5)

The food in Padang can send the foodies that like spicy fares, as high as the curved roof of the Minangkabau house. The roof, shaped like the horns of the buffalo adorned many Padang houses. It is majestic and a sight to behold.

I am no great fan of Padang food as I have problem handling chilies. I cut down on spicy stuff esp. when I am traveling. Having a stomach upset is really inconvenient. Yes, I do miss out on some of these food but always try to sample it.

Breakfast in Padang is without fanfare. Simple, tasty and nutritious. These were what I had.

The vegetable dish in the forefront was free. It contained boiled tapioca leaves!
Nasi Lemak? No!! It was Banana Leaf Wrapped Rice! It was kept in Bamboo Basket. Nice way to keep it warm.Famous Sambel Merah. A must for Padang food together with Sambel Hijau. It's cooked in oil.
Fresh, really fresh kembong coated with batter and deep fried. I prefer removing the batter and pulled out morsel by morsel of steaming and sea-fresh fish. Nothing could beat fishes that were just caught the same morning!Another take on the sweet and juicy meat with rice and potatoes if so desire!Begedil - a kind of mashed potatoes with shallots, garlic, pepper etc. Deep-fried. Forget about the unhealthy oil. Tasted better than mashed potatoes.
Cooked Eggs with Red Sambel. A favourite with the young and the old.Proud owner of this un-named roadside store in Pariaman. It is opposite the volleyball court as shown by signboard below.

If I were there, my choice would be the rice and egg, maybe together with the fish. It would be my breakfast.

Is "begedil" malay word? Here in Indo, it's known as "perkedel" :)

Selba... I thought its Malay. Sounds the same - similar roots. Lots of Padangnese settled down in Malaysia.
